A Letter to My 16 Year Old Self

 Dear 16-years old Kris

It is hard at the moment, isnt it? Having to deal with all the pressure that you are facing now because of O levels, and also having to choose a future path that will be most beneficial for you. Of course I understand, that was what I went through. And, trust me, when I tell you that you will survive through them, just like me.  I am still here, writing this letter to you, two years from your future. Even though you will become more confident as time passes, having friends and family by your side and knowing what job you would like to have, you will still be insecure about life after school and what it holds, but I think it will turn out fine.

Very soon, you will be admitted to Nanyang Polytechnic, yes I know, youre not sure if its the right decision. However, you will learn to enjoy the experience in NYP while making  many new and trustworthy friends. NYP will be your home for the next 3 years and, fret not, it is not what you think.

Yes, unfortunately you will have to travel the same way to school for another 3 more years since its so near your secondary school, but the environment is different and the people are warmer and more mature. Two years later, you will still find many parts of the school new and unexplored, and every minute you spend in campus will be fulfilling and exciting especially when the campus is still expanding.

A few months after being in NYP, you might feel scared, frustrated and all sorts of negative emotions will flood your mind. I understand that you do not mix well with strangers but soon, you will learn to feel more comfortable and make so many friends that you will be proud that you made NYP your choice.

Learn to be more outgoing, it will help you more since in poly, you will be deprived of many things if you just keep quiet and be your shy self.

Life in NYP is a walk in the park. Relax and enjoy every single moment you spend, whether you are studying or playing, and you will love your life.

But there will be a few moments when you start doubting yourself - when projects and friendships start to go haywire. Do not be scared and shut yourself in. Share your emotions with people close to you, let it all out and try not to stress too much. It will cause your hair to turn white.

Learn to smile more, talk more, laugh more and maybe be a little crazy because you are still young. As long as you keep to the rules, why not enjoy yourself? Dont wall yourself up and learn to communicate with others more. The lecturers and tutors are really nice and kind, dont worry.

Also, join CCAs and make more friends. You love writing, so why not make use of your interest and join the Write Stuff? You will join the club in Year 2 and really enjoy writing articles, but you keep asking yourself: if only you had joined it a little earlier. Maybe this letter would comprise an even better vocabulary and a more elegant writing style.

Two years later, you have outgrown that immature girl you were then, and you would be a much better and more cheerful person, enjoying a vibrant campus life. Right now, all you have to do is just be yourself and you will be fine. Have fun.

With much love,
18 years old Kris
