The Wonder of White Oak Falls

Image
As I approached White Oak Falls on my second visit, a shaft of light was shifting across the face of the falls. I had to work fast to get this shot. I scampered up the rocks and into the basin below White Oak Falls, hurriedly set up my tripod in the stream bed, and, while trying to keep my wits, started shooting as quickly as possible. You just never know what you're going to find when you take a walk in the woods with your camera. The world changes day-by-day, minute-by-minute. How exciting! from West Virginia Waterfalls: The New River Gorge by Ed Rehbein and Randall Sanger. Click HERE.   White Oak Falls The Great Mystic White Oak Falls is the great mystic of southern West Virginia waterfalls. A beam of light seemingly sent from the heavens illuminates the falls adding a magical quality that few other waterfalls possess. Whats more it happens regularlyusually mid to late afternoon. Photographs of this blade of light crossing the face of White Oak Falls create a uniquely moody

Exploring the Rock Pinnacle at Meadow River

Image
Towering sandstone cliffs, a boulder-lined riverbed, and rolling whitewater rapidssounds like the New River. But it isnt. And theres more. A rock walled grotto, a 30-foot sandstone pinnacle, a little stone chapel, and a couple of waterfalls. Where is this place? Im referring to the Lower Meadow River. In some respects, its like the New River and then some. Indeed, if I had only one day to hike in Southern West Virginia, Id head for the Meadow River. It offers so much and is so accessible. In my new book Exploring the Wilds of West Virginia, I point out a couple of hikes and points of interest along the Meadow River. Let me mention one of those in this blogthe sandstone pinnacle.  Meadow River How Do You Get There? So how do you get to this wild river? Its surprisingly easy. The best access is at the Kevin Ritchie Memorial Bridge, which crosses the Meadow River on U.S. Highway 19. While driving U.S. 19, I noticed from time to time a few cars parked off the berm just north of t

An Open Letter to O Level Students

Image
Confused about your choices after your O levels? NYP Principal and CEO Jeanne Liew previously wrote an open letter which was published in The Straits Times in 2016. In it, she has practical advice on questions to ask and how to take the next step. We reproduce it here and hope you will find it useful.  ----- JC or poly? Make an informed choice Dear students, Some of you will be collecting your O-level results today and an important decision awaits you about which progression pathway you should choose. There are many options, including the junior colleges (JCs), polytechnics (polys), the Institute of Technical Education and the arts institutions. You may wonder about the key differences between the JC and poly routes and I hope to provide you with some information to help you make an informed choice. A key consideration would be your preferred learning style: Do you prefer a more academic mode of learning or a more applied, hands-on type of learning? When you were in secondary school, d

Fascinating Places Described in Exploring the Wilds of West Virginia

A New World Emerges at Summersville Lake  When the Corps lowers the water to winter levels at Summersville Lake, fascinating landscapes emerge. Nestled in the woodlands of West Virginia, an island of dry, desiccated, desert-like scenes arise from the once water-covered land.  Long Point Beautiful Boulders Perhaps the first thing youll notice are bold, beautiful, snow-white boulders of all shapes and sizes. The rocks are rough and angular and piled chaotically. Its like a scene from another world. The rocks are brilliant white because theyre below the water level during the summer and being submerged for so much of the year, they arent stained by the oxidation and weathering of iron-bearing minerals. So the rocks are in their most pristine state.  Long Point Stunning Cliffs These beautiful boulders have fallen from the gorgeous cliffs that circle Summersville Lake. Long Point stands out like a stone fortress. Its a photographers delight presenting dramatic poses from several viewp

Fuelled by passion and determination, Muhammad Ghazzi Bin Krisna throws all his focus and energy into his cycling pursuits and racks up numerous milestones on his journey. His efforts have paid off handsomely when he scores himself a coveted place in the Singapore Cycling Federations National Training Squad! The path to becoming a national cyclist is certainly not without obstacles. Once, Ghazzi contemplated withdrawing due to failing two modules twice. The second-year Diploma in Chemical & Pharmaceutical Technology student recalls that it was indeed a very low period for him. However, with support from his personal mentor, lecturers and course mates from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, he bounces back and is now juggling classes, workouts and trainings with ease. Efficient time management, he reckons, is the answer to his success. His lecturers would allow him to skip lessons when he needs to attend competitions. Ghazzi also makes sure that he informs his school way i

Coming soon Credits ?? : @seanwishtofly A photo posted by Legion Apparels (@legion.apparels) on Nov 22, 2016 at 3:59am PST When the word got out that Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) has launched an exclusive streetwear available exclusively in DStudio, it was gone before many could even check them out! Yup, this latest collection of NYP tees was designed by our own students Simon Ng Wei Hao (Diploma in Business Management) and Bryan Lian Jenn Yi (Diploma in Engineering with Business). Simon (left in picture), a final-year student, was attached to DStudio during his Teaching Enterprise Project (TEP) was first intrigued by how well the NYP tees were selling. He toyed with the idea of creating NYPs first ever streetwear collection with his buddy Bryan Lian Jenn Yi (right in picture), also a final-year student but from the Diploma in Engineering with Business. Both of them shared a common interest in fashion trends and thought they could design something new. With encouragement from DStudio

From Unsure to Confident

What to do after N Levels? This is a bugging question for those who are taking their N Levels at some point. A few months before his N Level exams in 2012, Wong Jao Kuean was introduced to the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP).  He was enticed to PFP because he would be able to secure a place in the course of his choice and the one-year programme would give him a solid foundation before he commenced on the actual three-year diploma course.  This would give him in an advantage over the majority who joined the polys via the O Level path. I can tell you that it isnt easy.  Even my teachers were not in favour of skipping O Levels because it seems the norm to have at least an O Level certificate when you are out in the working world, especially for English and Maths. However, I assured my parents that I will take O Level English during my polytechnic years to strengthen my portfolio, said Jao Kuean. It can be exhausting sometimes to remain true to yourself in an envi
