Kids Impress at Robopreneur Carnival 2015

Image
As early as 8 am in the morning on Saturday, 4th Jul 2015, Primary and Secondary students and their teachers started flocking to the NYP atrium to register and set up their booths. The atrium and auditorium were soon filled with students. The competitive spirit was in everyones hearts as students proudly displayed their SG50 themed robots, which they created in workshops held earlier. The aim of the event was to engage Primary and Secondary school students to enhance their thinking skills while having a fun filled learning experience with robotics. This years theme was SG50, and everything, from the robots themselves to the challenges, were SG50 based. For the main challenge, students had 8 tasks to complete with their robots. As you can see in the picture above, the students had to pass 8 obstacles on a platform. The starting point on the platform represented Year 1965 and the end point was Year 2015. All the tasks included sub-themes that were related to the events that happened in...

For the third year students from the School of Engineering (SEG), the time to shine has come. SEGs annual Open Project Exhibition was held on the 27th May 2015, at Block S Level 1, and our seniors were given the chance to proudly show off 12 weeks of their hard work on their final year projects, not only to their juniors, but to the public as well. Mr Albert Sng, the lecturer-in-charge of the event, was more than happy to share some details with us. This event occurs twice every semester for third years. All projects displayed during the exhibition are selected by course supervisors of each SEG course, and selected students are to present their projects to at least 6 of the 18 judges at the exhibition. Each presentation had to include a brief description of the project, inclusive of a 2-minute Q&A. The judges would then decide which projects deserve to be in the top three. There is also a way for visitors and the students themselves to take part -they can vote for the projects the...

If you love technology and travelling, you have to check out Triplynr. Triplynr (pronounced trip-liner), wants to streamline trip-planning and help users discover new places through peer reviews. Users create their travel itinerary on Triplynr, and share it with the rest of the community. Once the itinerary has been created, users can book hotel rooms and their flights with integrated links to Expedia and Skyscanner. When Triplynr launches its iOS and Android app in June, users will also able to take their itinerary with them on their phone. This includes maps stored locally in the phones memory, eliminating the need to download the data with expensive, overseas mobile data plans.   Trip-planning made easy Co-founders Leo Tan and Sean Yang love to travel. The duo have taken over 50 trips in total, but when Leo started planning a post-graduation, 21-day backpacking trip to Europe, he saw an opportunity to streamline months of planning. Now, instead of planning for 6 months, Triply...

As an avid swimmer, Tan Jian Yong, alumnus of NYPs School of Engineering, was part of the Lifeguard Corps in NYP where he met swimming instructors and learnt about swim coaching and related skills. After he was certified as a swimming instructor, Jian Yong started giving private swimming lessons but faced problems with students cancelling classes at the last minute and defaulting on payments, both of which affected his schedule and income. That was when the idea for Happy Fish Swim School came up. In order to solve the problems that he and many other freelance instructors faced, Jian Yong started a website linking swimming instructors with students. It offered many value-added services such as verification of instructors credentials, payment collection, student matching for instructors with location preference and class rescheduling. Not only did he relieve his fellow instructors of their problems, he also made his first million at the young age of 24. Sharing his key to success, he ...

The objective of this event was to trigger the students learning interest in polytechnic mathematics through interactive and fun activities. The event also gave prospective students a chance to experience the facilities at School of Engineering (SEG) and learn from the lecturers there. SEG students were also on hand to guide the students and bonded with them through the various activities. At 9am, there was a briefing session on the Maths Amazing Race in LTQ-7. After the briefing, all teams received an envelope consisting of clues that led them to their respective first station to begin the Race.
