Club Crawl Special: Should you join a CCA?

I heard this as a freshie, just coming into NYP. And to be honest, I was going to forgo co-curricular activities altogether but fortunately my Personal Mentor (this is a lecturer assigned to a small group of students) encouraged me otherwise.
So I went down to Club Crawl last year to find out more about the different CCAs offered.
Wait, you may be wondering, what is Club Crawl?!
Club Crawl is NYP�s very own CCA Open House where all CCAs are given a booth to showcase their activities in the Polytechnic�s atrium. Students, especially freshmen, are encouraged to talk to seniors from the different CCAs to learn more about what they do. They are also encouraged to sign up with a CCA they are interested in.
When I attended Club Crawl last year, I was amazed at the number of CCAs NYP had to offer.
I was initially confused and a little overwhelmed because I did not know the difference between some of the CCAs. So I used the Crawl as a platform to ask the seniors questions.
Here�s a fun fact! Did you know that there are over 80 different CCAs available in NYP, spanning across six different categories? The categories are: Academic Clubs, Arts & Culture, Community Service & Environment, Sports & Adventure, Leadership & Character Development and Societies! Click here to view the CCAs available!
If you are interested in planning events and camps, you can join your School�s Academic Club. Joining an academic club will help you to build on your teamwork skills and academic interests. If you are interested in singing, dancing, playing an instrument or even make-up, take a look at the Arts & Culture category! If helping people and Mother Nature is your passion, a CCA from the Community Service & Environment category will definitely suit you!
If playing a sport is your forte or interest, or you enjoy going outdoors, be sure check out the Sports Adventure category! If you like to attend and participate in events, workshops, training camps and exchange programmes, a CCA from the Leadership & Character Development category would be suitable for you! If have interest in a particular religion, you can join a CCA from the Societies category!
Based on my experience last year, here are some questions you should ask before scribbling your name down.
1. Is it my interest?
Join a CCA that you are interested in as you will be participating in it for the next few years in NYP. You would not want to dread going for CCA because it is something that you are not interested in. Join something you are passionate about.
2. Can I commit?
Ask yourself if you have the time and energy to participate in the CCA. Some CCAs require a lot of practice for competitions and events. Some CCAs even stay back till midnight to practice. Commitment and dedication is important.
3. How can I contribute?
Where do you see yourself in the CCA? Is there a personal goal you want to achieve? Or want to develop leadership skills? Know what your goals and desires are and actively contribute to the CCA to achieve them.

Join a CCA that you will enjoy and it will bring you countless benefits. You will get to pursue your passion, learn a new skill and make new friends! To be committed, you need good time management to juggle between school, CCA and personal commitments. To improve your leadership, teamwork and confidence, you have to actively contribute and participate in your CCA to increase the opportunities to develop yourself.
In the end? I joined The Write Stuff, a social media CCA that creates content for NYP�s social media channels. I joined this CCA as it supports my passion for writing and photography.
To date, I have thoroughly enjoyed myself In The Write Stuff as I can use it as a platform to share my passions with others. Additionally, I get to attend CCA bonding sessions and outings. I also get opportunities to plan for events like Club Crawl. These experiences gives me room for self-development. I have learnt how to work better in a team, how to manage and prioritise my time, as well as enhance my leadership skills.

The Write Stuff and our sister CCA, Team Outreach (who are the poly�s ambassadors reaching out secondary schools), are merging to form a brand new CCA called The Communicators.
As The Communicators, we�ll continue to take photos for NYP�s social media pages and write entries for NYP�s blog as well as continue our ambassadorial role. There�s also elements of event planning. We are ambassadors for NYP and often, we will provide course advising and facilitate learning journeys for secondary school students. As members of The Communicators, we also have bonding and self-development sessions so that we can get to know our peers and ourselves better.

In conclusion, to answer the question: �Should you join a CCA in NYP?� My answer is a definite �yes�!
