The 11 chefs who contributed to the SG50 commemorative cookbook  To celebrate Singapores 50th birthday, NYP  launched a commemorative cookbook at its very own LRez restaurant, on 10th June 2015. Called The Singapore Heritage: Past, Present and Future, the cookbook is co-authored by Dr Leslie Tay and features the recipes of two very talented NYP students and 9 renowned local chefs, including executive chef Tony Khoo. 8 Simple Ways to Help Keep our Campus Clean

Image
On a typical weekday,  thousands of students and staff walk through NYPs corridors. With the large number of people using its facilities on a day-to-day basis, our cleaning staff need to work hard to maintain the cleanliness in campus. Their hard-work often goes unnoticed, especially when we take the things they do for granted.  Finding a clean and conducive studying environment around campus is easy thanks to our cleaning staff. Therefore, why not show our appreciation by helping to keep the campus clean? Here are 8 ways you can help our cleaners! 1. Showing your appreciation by saying Thank You Showing appreciation for the cleaners hard-work by thanking them is a gesture that would definitely bring a smile to their faces and it should be practised often. 2. Returning of trays after consumption of food Many hands make light work is a quote from John Heywood. The cleaners work would inevitably be lightened if each and every individual takes the responsibility to retur...

Kids Impress at Robopreneur Carnival 2015

Image
As early as 8 am in the morning on Saturday, 4th Jul 2015, Primary and Secondary students and their teachers started flocking to the NYP atrium to register and set up their booths. The atrium and auditorium were soon filled with students. The competitive spirit was in everyones hearts as students proudly displayed their SG50 themed robots, which they created in workshops held earlier. The aim of the event was to engage Primary and Secondary school students to enhance their thinking skills while having a fun filled learning experience with robotics. This years theme was SG50, and everything, from the robots themselves to the challenges, were SG50 based. For the main challenge, students had 8 tasks to complete with their robots. As you can see in the picture above, the students had to pass 8 obstacles on a platform. The starting point on the platform represented Year 1965 and the end point was Year 2015. All the tasks included sub-themes that were related to the events that happened in...

True Beauty Runs Deep

Image
In a co-ed tertiary institution like Nanyang Polytechnic, it seems everybody wants to be beautiful. Reasons may vary. It may be simply to attract the attention of the opposite gender, to find a companion, or for one to feel more confident in class. Some of us may become especially conscious about how we look, because we secretly hope to attract the cutest girl or guy to fall in love with us. We aim to look like movie stars so that we  stand out from the others. Hence, we go all out to embellish ourselves through dyeing our hair, trimming our eyebrows, and wearing pretty or cool outfits and accessories. Some of us even have regimented dieting programmes or exercise routines, in order to achieve an hourglass figure or washboard abs. Though I am not concerned about fashion, I do work out vehemently to get my tough frame. However, what if a birth defect or an acquired disease, or even an unfortunate accident leaves us with a permanent disfigurement or handicap? Does that mean we are go...

What are you afraid of?

Image
Ever since the beginning of time, fear is known for doing many things. Lurking deep in our hearts, fear constricts, hinders, and may even break the spirits and minds of people.  It eats at us from the inside, assaulting us with past failures and doubt, paralyzing us against our true potential. With standardized tests, students could face overbearing-stress when they do not perform up to par. Singapores emphasis on grades can potentially strike fear in those who arent academically inclined, by pressurizing them to meet expectations. I had this big fear of failing. I was in constant stress and it got so bad that my parents had to bring me for counselling. That helped me to be more positive.  Its extremely important to talk to the right people, because handling struggles alone is very dangerous, said Stephanie Melinda, a Year 1 Common Engineering Student. Stephanie Melinda After completing my first year in Nanyang Polytechnic, I was really demoralized when I received a GPA s...

In addition, we also celebrated Singapores diverse culture and the nations 50th birthday. Registration booths at the Atrium By 3.30pm the registration booths at the atrium were swarming with students and the public. All participants received a free white T-shirt and coloured wristband. Whats in a future designers bag?

Image
Ever wondered what's in the bag of a future graphics designer, a visual effects artist or an animator? Look no further! Quench your curiosity as I inspect Valery Sengs bag. She is a Year 1 Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design student. Of course, you would expect a laptop! What is poly life without a laptop right? Valery here owns the Macbook Pro 15-inch. The extra 2 inches is definitely useful as she needs to create and edit pieces on software like Photoshop and After Effects. This particular model weighs a hefty 2kg! Valery will definitely train her muscles carrying this. Heres an unconventional pencil case! In it is a notebook that is vital for a course without worksheets. But look closely, the black and white stick is actually a KNIFE! Being in a design course means there is a lot of crafting and cutting. So this X-ACTO knife is definitely handy in class. She also has a pen to take notes with, and a kneadable eraser for her Fundamentals of Drawing class! On days when Valery...
