Whats the big deal with ASEP?

Image
Have you seen secondary school students in uniform walking around NYP during the day? They are potentially our future juniors. Heres why: These students are here for the Applied Studies Experience Programme, more commonly known as ASEP. ASEP is an initiative by Singapores Education Ministry to implement applied learning for secondary school students. So NYP partners a few Secondary Schools so that their Secondary 3 students get to come over and see what a poly education is like! Are you wondering why only Sec 3 students? It is the best year to start planning the future. It is just a year away from O/N levels. After experiencing ASEP, students can then think about the courses they want to apply for, and prepare for their application for NYP. I signed up to be an ASEP guide, and to represent NYP.  My job as a student leader is to guide the students through the visits to academic schools where fun activities and talks are planned for them! The Sec 3 students I have encountered se...

How a CCA Changed My Life

Image
Me (extreme right) and my posse In a few weeks, I will start my very last semester at Nanyang Poly. Its been nostalgic looking back on my last 2 and a half years here: I think I have achieved many milestones, from going through semester exams to completing my industrial attachment! But I reckon the best thing I did in NYP was to join a CCA. Specifically, my CCA, The Communicators. Why did I join a CCA when its not compulsory? Nope, Im not giving a long explanation on how CCA records can look good in portfolios. Instead, heres my honest take. Reason 1: I wanted to optimise my free time During my first semester in Year 1, I was part of the carefree go-home club I was free from CCA commitments after the last lesson of the day. It was such a nice departure from CCA commitments in Secondary School! I really enjoyed it.   Then in the middle of the semester, I realised that too much free time at home became wasted time! That was when I made up my mind to join something fu...

Goal Diggers Dream Come True

Image
Year 2 Multimedia & Infocomm Technology student Tea Pei Qi ? calls herself a Goal Digger.  Yes. You read that right. She recently won one of NYPs 12 Gold Medals in the WorldSkills Singapore 2018 competition, and she calls herself a Goal Digger because she refuses to settle for mediocrity. She is deeply passionate about her skill area Web Design & Development. I was part of the WorldSkills Youth New Media Team and managed to score an interview with her. Here is what she has to say about the competition: Q: How do you feel about winning Gold in WorldSkills Singapore? Did you expect it? A: I was shocked at first, because I didn't do that well on the first day: There were very obvious and serious bugs in the program that I submitted.  For example, I was supposed to direct the user to the "/home" URL, but I directed them to "/home/home". On day one of the competition, we had to draw lots for our seat, and I drew a seat where the visitors' chatter w...

5 Group Discussion Spots You Need to Check Out in NYP

Image
Term Break has ended! Apart getting to see our friends again, we all have group projects to do! NYP has lots of conducive places to study, but here are my top 5 best picks! #1: Smart Learning Spaces   Location: NYP Library, Block A, Level 4 North Wing Air-conditioned? Check! Quiet? Check! Power sockets? Check! Located within the Librarys Smart Learning Hub, the Smart Learning Spaces are basically rooms that can be booked through our NYP portal. Each room is enclosed, meaning that you will be able to block out noise, and brainstorm with your group in peace!  Also, it comes with plenty of power points J . Only caveat? You can get a maximum of one hour, per group (min 3pax, max 6 pax), each day. Plus bookings only open only 1 day in advance. Still worth it though. To book: Visit the NYP portal > e-Services > Facility Reservations > Online Booking (Only for Library Smart Learning Spaces), then follow the instructions on the screen.  PS: Heres a tip: There i...

Top 5 Misconceptions about EAE

Image
Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) applications take place this month. If you have made the decision to apply for one of our 44 courses, great! But before you hit the submit button, take note of these five common misconceptions about EAE, and pay extra attention to your application! 1) If you reject your first choice (if offered), the poly/s in the second and third choice will make an offer No this is not true. If your first choice is offered and you reject it, you will not be getting an offer from your second and third choices. 2) As long as you are accepted, your place is guaranteed No, your place is not guaranteed. This is a conditional offer, and this means that you will still need to meet the minimum entry requirements (MER) of the course you are applying for and obtain a net ELR2B2 score of 26 or better. It takes the pressure off taking your O levels and having to score the best grades to compete for a place, but you still need to meet the minimum grades. 3) You must submit 3 cho...

Top 5 Ways to Ace Your EAE Application

Image
Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) applications take place this month. If, for some reason, you are not confident about getting into your dream poly course with your O-Levels or Nitec results, this is going to be your best bet to secure that spot in the poly course you really want. You see, the EAE is not about academic results but rather interviewers  look for people who have the interest and aptitude for these courses! Polys can admit up to 15.0% of their total intake via EAE, and the best thing is, you only need to meet the minimum entry requirements (MER). Yass! Want to ace your EAE application? Take note of these points. 1) 600-Character write-up (Aptitude and Interest) The 600-Character write-up includes spacing and punctuation, so keep your piece short and sweet. When you get to the exclamation mark at end of this sentence, wed already have used 215 characters in this paragraph! So, yeah, you dont have a lot of space. So you want to be sure to express your interest in the fi...
