The PFP and me

Rebecca Lou graduated at the top of her cohort at NYPs School of Interactive & Digital Media, winning the Lee Hsien Loong Award in 2017. She says that as a child, she often doodled little cartoon figures in her notebooks and textbooks. So when she did well for her N Levels, the first thing she did was to check out whether she could get into the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). This is a one-year bridging programme think about it as a prep year - to get students into the diploma course of their choice. Rebecca used the PFP and enrolled in the Diploma in Animation. During her time at NYP, she exhibited her works at the ArtScience Museum, and had a chance to intern with Walt Disney Companys Southeast Asia arm. Her skills eventually clinched her a full-time job offer! We spoke to Rebecca about her PFP journey. Why did you choose the PFP route? When I first received my N level results, I did not expect to do so well. When I realised I was eligible for the PFP, I was thrilled ...

Hidden Gems at NYP

Image
NYP celebrated its 25 th anniversary in 2017. So, we decided to scout for things that not many people know about.   To get this list, it was weeks of research and speaking to NYPians before whittling down to the best. Enjoy! 1.    Outdoor Amphitheatre Think of performance venues at NYP, and the auditorium or the Theatre for the Arts usually comes to mind.  But we have another outdoor performance venue: tucked away near the sports stadium, is an often overlooked amphitheatre. This 500-seater has mainly hosted CCA meetings, school-related activities and musical events. Its got a dramatic dome that makes it perfect for drama performances, or for students of ancient Greek philosophy in togas. Were kidding about the togas. 2.    Beach Volleyball Sand Pit There is no need to travel to Sentosa for a game of beach volleyball! There are dedicated sand pits at our own sports stadium. Head to the stadium, and theyre on the right side of the track, visible from th...

5 Places All New Students Need to Check Out in NYP

Image
New to NYP and keen to check out what the campus has in store for you?  These five new facilities will have you covered for work, play, food and much more! 1. Cheers Singapores first unmanned and cashless outlet Taking efficiency to a whole new level, the Cheers outlet at NYP is completely unmanned, with no cashiers and sales assistants. Students can pay for their purchases using Nets, ez-link, credit cards or through mobile payment at three self check-out kiosks. This not only increases productivity for the students managing the store, it also enables student shoppers to check out their items faster. There are also vending machines in the store that provide a variety of warm and chilled food. Let all worries about starving on a cashless day be gone! 2. T-Junction An entertainment centre, caf and gym all in one! This place could very well be the most interesting place in NYP with all the entertainment it offers (free of charge as well!). From karaoke rooms to an array of Wi...

A SEMESTER ABROAD

Image
As the customs officer cleared my entry at Londons Heathrow Airport, I felt a mixture of both excitement and nervousness. I was going to spend an entire semester on NYPs Overseas Student Exchange Programme far away from home. I knew it was going to be a different lifestyle in the northeast of England where my fellow OSEP participants and I were going to read Mass Communications at Northumbria University. We arrived at the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the wee hours of the morning on Sep 9, 2016. We noticed plenty of graffiti on the walls of the railroads as we checked into Glassworks Student Accommodation (renamed now as true Newcastle), a 20-minute walk to the university campus.  My room at Glassworks Student Accommodation I fully appreciated how my lecturers from NYP who were in constant contact with us, checking in to ensure we were alright, and that we were coping well with our studies.  The general vibe at Northumbria was also very friendly as everyone treated each oth...
