NYP FRESHMEN'S GUIDE 2018 - PART ONE
Hi Freshmen! Welcome to NYP, your second home for the next three years. We�ve got some info to get you started on your NYP journey. Here goes!
1. Best Smile Forward
It�s not a myth! Nice passport photos do exist! And it�s important that you get one for yourself. Why? It�ll be on your admin card, your EZ-link card and for any other school administration documents.
There are photo taking services pretty much in all the malls now. A little tip: Take it yourself if you can. This way, you can edit it to your liking. (Remember, this photo will follow you for the next three years.)
If you�re DIY-ing your passport photo, here are a few tips for you:
1. Use a white wall!
2. Take your picture in a well-lit room, preferably with natural light (you�ll look better!).
3. Position yourself to minimise the shadows casted on the white wall.
4. Use apps like Photoshop to edit your photos! If you aren�t sure how to use Photoshop, I recommend using Snapseed on your phone to lighten your background! Quick, fast and simple.

Here�s how you can use Snapseed:
1. Open Snapseed and select your photo to start editing.
2. Click on the �Tools� tab and select the �Selective� tool.
3. Select the + sign and tap on the parts you would like to brighten
4. On any part of the screen, swipe towards the right to brighten that area and swipe towards the left to darken that area.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you are happy
6. Once done, select the tick and save your picture!
2. Expanding Your General Skills & Knowledge
So, apart from our core and elective modules that we�ve to take for our diploma, all NYP students have to take General Studies Modules (GSMs). Not to worry, these modules are not included in the computation of your GPA. But you should enjoy them all the same as they are pass or fail modules.
For freshmen, you have to take three prescribed GSMs � Pillars of Life (POL), Personal Career Strategy (PCS) and Fitness for Life (FFL) across two semesters.
When you progress to Year 2 & 3, you will have to take up prescribed and elective GSMs.
Do find out if you are doing your FFL GSM in semester one or two. If you are doing it in semester one (this coming semester), take note of the date to select your preferred sport! Comprehensive details on GSM are at this site!

Admit it, how many of you cringe when recalling your secondary school email address? It probably contains weird symbols, is hard to pronounce and� embarrassing?
Create a new email address for yourself! It should be used for school-related emails. Unlike secondary school, we use our email very often in poly to contact lecturers and tutors. It is also a way for NYP to send important information to us. With a new email address used for school-related emails, you�ll be able to find your emails easily, without having to deal with spam.
4. Getting Connected in NYP
We all know WIFI is important, and getting connected to WIFI in NYP is really easy! To connect to WIFI via your phone, go to your phone�s WIFI settings and switch it on. Let your phone scan for the available networks. After scanning, select �NYP-Student� and select �connect�! There will be a popup prompting you for your ID (your admin number) and password. You should receive your admin and pin/password in your student enrolment package.
To connect via your laptop, open the link here and download the zip folder, open it, and key in your username and password in the popup!

5. What�s new in poly
In secondary school, we study subjects. In polytechnic, we study modules. Every semester, we complete about six modules. (The number of modules taken depends on your course and the semester you are in).
We have to attend both lectures and tutorials.
Lectures: Lessons taught in a large group
Tutorials: Lessons taught in smaller groups. We have more interaction with our tutor and this allows us to clarify our doubts more easily.
Instead of lectures or tutorials, some modules have practicals and lab sessions. If you are taking design, health science, science or engineering courses, you are likely to have some modules taking place in a studio, lab or workshop.
